I think this all stems from the fact that people don't yet trust ATMs 100%. They want physical proof they can look at and verify their transaction. If they asked for $40, they want to make sure $400 wasn't deducted from their account. A time when I prefer a receipt is when I make a deposit. When I deposit, there is no guarantee that my envelope won't get shredded inside the ATM, or lost in transit and processing. I like to have physical proof of my deposit request. Bank of America had an ad campaign showcasing their next-generation ATMs which automatically scan deposited checks and display an image on the screen. I think this is a great idea because you have immediate feedback that your check has been received by the bank, and that it can't be lost later on while processing.
