On the Mac the <em>chasing bars</em> are used throughout the operating system, not just specifically during logging in and logging out. The appearance of the <em>chasing bars</em> occurs only as a response to some action (e.g. searching your HD, checking email). This is different from icon representations of actions users can take. The chasing bars widget on the Mac indicates activity, much like the hour glass widget in Windows.
